Significance of Serum Human Placental Lactogen Concentration During Pregnancy

Abstract
The determination of the placental function could be an important information for estimalion of health condition and efficient management of neonates.
But the accurate estimation of placental function remains difficult problem. Human placental lactogen, secreted by syncytiotrophoblast, is a single chain polypeptide held together by two. double bonds. Serum levels of HPL are related to placental function. Auther studied the concentration of serum HPL in 142 pregnant women by radioimmunoassey(Phadebase) in order to determine the possible role of HPL as an index of placental function.
The purpose of the present investigation was two fold. First is to measure the change of HPL concentrations in normal pregnancies with advancing gestational age. Second is to? measure the changes of HPL concentrations in hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, postterm pregnancies and pregnancies complicated by postmaturity.
The results were as follows;
1) HPL was detected the serum of pregnant women as early as 7 week of gestation. Serumm levels of HPL rised steadly during first and second trimester. During third trimester, serum levels of HPL reached higher level. At 37th week of gestation, serum levels of HPL reached peak value. Thereafter those levels decreased gradually.
2) Fetal body weight and placental weight did not influence on the serum levels of HPL. 3) Serum levels of HPL in case of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy were significantly lower than normal pregnancies.
4) Serum levels of HPL in case of severe preeclampsia were significantly lower than mild form.
5) Serum levels of HPL in case of postterm pregnancies were significantly lower than normal pregnancies.
6) Serum levels of HPL in case of postterm pregnancies with sign of postmaturity were significantly lower than that in case of postterm pregnancies without sign of postmaturity.
